General Facts of Andalucia


Andalucia is located in southern part of Spain and is bordered by the regions of Extremadura, Castilla la Mancha and Murcia, and of course Portugal in the west. Andalucia currently has approximately 8,000,000 inhabitants.
The capital of Andalucia is Seville.

Andalucia is divided into 8 provinces with a combined area of over 87,000 km2 and therefore Andalucia has a population of about 80 inhabitants per km2. For comparison the Netherlands has over 16,000,000 inhabitants and an area of over 41.000km2.  In Andalucia there are about 80 inhabitants per km2 and in the Netherlands it's over 394! inhabitants per km2.

The language in Andalucia is Spanish, also called castellano or español.

Andalucia is in the eastern part bordered by the Sierra Nevada, in the south by the Mediterranean Sea in the north there is the Sierra Morena and in the western part, Andalucia is bordered by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Guadalquivir River is the largest river in Andalucia. The origin of the Guadalquivir is located in the Sierra de Cazorla and this Spanish River has a length of about 570 km to finally flow into the sea near Seville. En route, the Guadalquivir flows through the cities Cordoba and Seville. Until Cordoba the Guadalquivir is navigable but ships can not get any further than Sevilla. Guadalquivir is the Arabic name meaning "large river" .

At the mouth of this river lies the Donana national park which is an important place for many species and especially the many migratory birds who descend on their tour from north to south and vice versa.
