Alicante / Alacant

 

Alicante is located in the eastern part of Spain. Alicante currently has over 250,000 inhabitants.
The history of Alicante dates back to the Roman times, witness the many excavations done in Alicante.

The city of Alicante has not to many attractions but the sheltered location of Alicante created a wonderful climate in the surrounding of Alicante. Due to this Alicante has become a famous resort on the Costa Blanca.

As mentioned, Alicante is not the place to visit if you are looking for many monuments, but Alicante the perfect place for shopping, walking and to enjoy the many restaurants which are situated in Alicante.
In terms of transport, mainly the port of Alicante and the airport located just south of Alicante are very important.
Besides the transport of goods to and from the port of Alicante, there are also several ferries leaving from Alicante to destinations such as Morocco and the Balearic Islands. The airport of Alicante, El Altet, is a modern and very busy airport. Alicante Airport annually processes over 9,000,000 passengers. From the airport of Alicante you can take buses (no trains yet) to both Alicante, Murcia and Benidorm. In 2010 Alicante will be connected to the high speed railroad making the AVE possible to arrive and leave from Alicante. The first high speed train connecting will be between Alicante and Madrid, later on Alicante will be connected by high speed train to Valencia - Barcelona as well.

The most impressive monument is the remnant of the Castillo de Santa Barbara. The ruins of this fort, located on a hill in the northern part of Alicante, has over the past centuries, by numerous wars, frequently been destroyed and rebuilt afterwards. This fort in Alicante can be visited including some homes, still in their original state, where once the soldiers stayed and lived.

The other (public) attractions in Alicante are:

  • Esplanada de España, a comprehensive and well-known boulevard
  • Catedral de San Nicolas de Bari
  • Alicante Ayuntamiento, town hall
  • Casa de la Asegurada Alicante, Museum of Modern Art
  • Parroquial Iglesia de Santa Maria, a church which was originally a mosque
